Today, it’s our absolute pleasure at the Kelli Joy O’Laughlin Memorial Foundation to welcome Avery McDonnell as our newest scholarship recipient. Avery, a soon-to-be graduate of Lyons Township High School, embodies the spirit of kindness, service, and positivity that lies at the heart of our foundation’s mission and continues the inspiring legacy of Kelli Joy.
Throughout her high school career, Avery has made a remarkable impact by consistently putting others first. Her involvement in the Polar Plunge, an annual fundraiser supporting athletes with special needs through the Special Olympics, showcases Avery’s unwavering commitment to service. Each year, she raises over \$500 to support this cause, braving the chilly waters with enthusiasm and a contagious smile. Avery herself best explains this dedication, writing in her essay, “I am always the person cheering loudest on the sidelines…even strangers on the street, I always try to smile and wave because you never know if that may be the best part of their day.”
Beyond school activities, Avery’s presence has been felt deeply within her local community. At the Westchester Food Pantry, she volunteers regularly, not only assisting people with obtaining essential groceries but also offering genuine kindness and connection to everyone she meets. Avery’s compassion and care transform ordinary interactions into moments of warmth and understanding, underscoring the profound belief she shared in her application essay that “a small gesture can go a long way.”
Avery’s teachers have also recognized and celebrated her remarkable character and contributions. While overcoming challenges like dyslexia, Avery has demonstrated resilience without losing her optimism or eagerness to learn. Her determination and hard work have led her to Bates College, her dream school, where she plans to continue pursuing her passions. We are thrilled to support Avery on this journey, providing a renewable scholarship to help ease her financial path forward.
