At the Kelli Joy O’Laughlin Memorial Foundation, we continually find inspiration in young people who naturally embody compassion, kindness, and genuine warmth—qualities that defined Kelli’s beautiful legacy. It’s with great excitement that we announce Maddie Brennan as one of our newest scholarship recipients. Maddie, soon to graduate from Lyons Township High School, has touched the lives of many in ways both large and small, bringing her own special brand of positivity and care into her community.

Maddie’s connection to Kelli’s legacy began early in life. Growing up in Indian Head Park, Maddie vividly remembers the community coming together to honor Kelli’s memory with a balloon release on April 2, 2012, in celebration of Kelli’s birthday. At that time, Maddie would have been around six years old. Even at such a young age, she recalls the profound feeling of unity and remembrance as colorful balloons filled the sky, a beautiful tribute to a life characterized by joy and kindness.

Summers spent at Camp Tecumseh—a beloved place for Kelli and her family—further strengthened Maddie’s connection to Kelli’s memory. Seeing the cabin built by the foundation at Camp Tecumseh as a lasting tribute to Kelli in her happy place left a lasting impression on Maddie, instilling an appreciation for the enduring power of kindness and community. She reflects beautifully, noting how Kelli’s legacy taught her the importance of “radiating kindness, friendship, and joy to all those around her.”

This philosophy of compassion and support was evident in one of Maddie’s memorable experiences as a summer camp counselor. Maddie shared a touching story about a young camper who struggled during a scooter relay race, becoming overwhelmed and discouraged. Recognizing his distress, Maddie patiently stepped aside with him, practiced scooter techniques together, and encouraged him gently until he was confidently racing around, delighted and proud. This moment perfectly encapsulates Maddie’s understanding of true compassion: it’s not just sympathy, but actively helping someone find their own strength and confidence.

Maddie brings that same thoughtful empathy to her roles at school. Whether through her leadership in Best Buddies, where she actively creates inclusive friendships with students who have disabilities, or through her dedicated volunteer tutoring in Lyons Township’s Math Support Room, Maddie consistently seeks opportunities to uplift and empower others. Her recommenders noted this clearly, describing her as “kind, respectful, and supportive,” highlighting how “she sees the bright side in everything.”

Her determination and positivity have also marked her athletic career. As a committed member of the Varsity Competitive Cheer team for all four years of high school, Maddie demonstrated incredible perseverance, overcoming setbacks like significant injuries with relentless determination. Her coaches admire her resilience, kindness, and unwavering support of her teammates, qualities that align closely with Kelli’s spirit.

As Maddie prepares for her next chapter, we at the Kelli Joy O’Laughlin Memorial Foundation feel privileged to welcome her warmly into our family of scholars. Maddie, your kindness, resilience, and genuine care for those around you beautifully echo Kelli’s enduring legacy. We eagerly anticipate the wonderful impact you will continue to have on the world. Congratulations, Maddie!
