In a world that often moves too fast, it is heartening to meet individuals who bring warmth, compassion, and a true sense of community to everything they do. Today, we are honored to introduce Frances Oliver as the newest recipient of the Kelli Joy O’Laughlin Memorial Scholarship. Frances, a senior at Amundsen High School in Chicago, embodies the spirit of kindness and care that is at the heart of this award. Frances is pictured with Melissa Douglas, Board Member and sister-in-law of Kelli.

Frances’s journey to becoming a Kelli Joy Scholar is a testament to her character. While leading a school tour for prospective students, a visiting family recognized her incredible dedication and encouraged her to apply for the scholarship. This moment speaks volumes about the impact Frances naturally has on those around her—her kindness and leadership shine through in every interaction.

Frances is known affectionately by her close friends as “Meemaw,” a nickname that reflects her nurturing nature. In her heartfelt essay, Frances shared touching stories of the special bond she shares with her 91-year-old grandfather, who she lovingly cares for and spends time with, prioritizing his stories and well-being above her own busy schedule. Her deep sense of responsibility and compassion for her family mirrors the values that Kelli Joy held dear—offering love, time, and attention selflessly.

Beyond her family, Frances has made a profound impact on her school and community. She has dedicated over 100 hours as Social Media Manager for ChiTown Charities, led school tours through the Viking Experience Club, and mentored younger students as part of the Peer Mentoring Club. Whether it’s leading as team captain for her cross country team or managing social media for her school’s Sports Media Club, Frances steps up as a leader, always ensuring others feel seen, supported, and included.

Athletics have been a significant part of Frances’s high school experience as well. She has played varsity softball and cross country all four years, earning accolades like MVP and team captain. Yet, what stands out most is not just her success on the field but the way she uses sports as a platform for mentorship and community-building. Her coaches and teammates describe her as kind-hearted, committed, and determined—a leader who mediates conflict with empathy, shows up consistently for her team, and inspires others through her relentless spirit and integrity.

In honoring Frances Oliver as a recipient of the Kelli Joy O’Laughlin Memorial Scholarship, we celebrate her unwavering compassion, her dedication to uplifting those around her, and her remarkable ability to balance academic excellence, athletic achievement, and heartfelt service. Frances is a shining example of what it means to lead with kindness and strength, and we are incredibly proud to welcome her to the family of Kelli Joy Scholars.

Congratulations, Frances! Your story and spirit are an inspiration to us all, and we are excited to see the wonderful impact you will continue to make in the world.
