Some scholarship recipients learn about Kelli’s legacy through their schools or community flyers, but for Sean Tilles, that connection is woven right into the fabric of his childhood. Growing up in Western Springs, Sean laced up his running shoes to participate in the Run for Kelli twice during his youth. Years later, those early footsteps have come full circle. We love when our recipients have a personal history with our foundation, and Sean has spent years quietly modeling the exact spirit of joy, inclusion, and community that we strive to honor.

A standout graduate of Lyons Township High School, Sean’s journey is defined by a remarkable blend of athletic discipline, academic excellence, and a deep-seated commitment to uplifting others.

Leading on the Field and the Trails

Sean’s dedication and character shine brightest in the competitive arena, where his coaches know him as a leader who leads with profound humility. At Lyons Township, he was a standout soccer player, earning Defensive Player of the Year honors as a sophomore. Looking for a new challenge, he joined the cross-country team as a junior. He approached the sport with an eager desire to learn, quickly progressing to compete on the Varsity State Team, which placed 7th overall in Illinois.

By his senior year, Sean’s work ethic and positive impact earned him the role of Varsity Captain. His coaches recall his exceptional openness to feedback, his discipline, and his unique ability to uplift his teammates. Whether enduring a grueling distance workout or anchoring a soccer defense, Sean’s presence immediately raised the bar for everyone around him.

A Natural Gift for Inclusion and Service

What truly sets Sean apart is his naturally inclusive and selfless spirit. He doesn’t seek out volunteer work for accolades or recognition; he serves because he genuinely cares about making a positive difference in people’s lives. His neighbors and peers describe him as having a rare, charismatic ability to light up a room, yet he consistently uses that gift to make sure those around him feel valued and welcome.

This heart for service is evident in his extensive work with youth. Sean has dedicated his time to coaching soccer for students with disabilities through the AYSO VIP program, ensuring the joy of sports is accessible to all. Additionally, he has committed countless Sunday nights to serving on the Hinsdale Hospital Junior Board, taking on the responsibility of Ice Cream Social Chair, while also finding time to pack meals for the Westchester Food Pantry and make sandwiches for Beds Plus.

Excellence in the Classroom and Beyond

Beyond athletics and service, Sean is a scholar of the highest caliber. Balancing a rigorous academic workload with his responsibilities as a manager for WLTL Radio, Sean maintained a remarkable 3.83 unweighted (4.90 weighted) GPA. His stellar time-management skills, intellectual curiosity, and daily discipline prove that he is a young man who excels in every facet of life.

This fall, Sean will be heading to a Big 10 university—deciding between the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Illinois Urbana—where he plans to major in either Business or Political Science.

As Sean prepares for this next chapter, we are fully confident that he will continue to be a brilliant role model and a driving force for good, carrying forward the radiant kindness and empathy that defined Kelli’s life. We are incredibly honored to welcome Sean into our family of scholars!

Congratulations, Sean! Welcome to the Kelli Joy Memorial Scholarship family.
