The Kelli Joy O’Laughlin Memorial Foundation is proud to welcome James Wells as one of six recipients of our 2025 scholarships. James, a senior at Lindblom Math & Science Academy, has been awarded a $4,000 renewable scholarship in recognition of his academic achievement, athletic dedication, and deep commitment to compassion and service.

James exemplifies the values at the heart of our foundation. A standout scholar and leader, James balances a rigorous academic schedule with a wide array of extracurriculars. He serves as a teacher’s assistant for AP U.S. History, where he dedicates time to helping his fellow students thrive — whether that means clarifying challenging material, offering patient support, or creating classroom activities that build community. His teachers describe him as empathetic, dependable, and intellectually curious, someone who leads by example and lifts those around him.

But what truly sets James apart is his unwavering dedication to kindness in action. Whether volunteering with his church’s homeless ministry or mentoring through the I Am Abel Medical Foundation, James is someone who seeks out ways to help others, not for recognition, but because it’s who he is. “I am my brother’s keeper,” he wrote in his application, and he lives that truth each day. He saves money to help those less fortunate, assembles food baskets for families in need, and finds joy in small, quiet acts of service — like helping a stranger with a flat tire or buying someone a tank of gas. He believes that even the smallest gestures can be powerful, and he strives to be a steady source of care and encouragement in a world that often needs more of both.

James’s journey has not been without hardship. After the loss of his grandmother during his junior year, he found strength and focus through wrestling — channeling his emotions into discipline, perseverance, and leadership. He has since become a role model for younger teammates, balancing athletic goals with academic responsibility. On the mat, in the classroom, and within his community, James is known for his integrity, resilience, and deep sense of purpose.

Looking ahead, James plans to pursue a degree in physical therapy with a minor in business. His dream is to open a clinic that takes a holistic approach to healing — one that provides accessible, culturally competent care to those often left behind by the healthcare system. “This scholarship,” he wrote, “which rewards compassion, will be a great foundation to allowing my dreams to come to fruition.”

With this year’s awards, the Kelli Joy O’Laughlin Memorial Foundation has now granted 112 scholarships totaling over $883,000. Each recipient joins a growing family inspired by Kelli’s legacy of kindness, curiosity, and compassion.

James, we are so proud to welcome you to the KJO family. Your drive to serve others and lead with empathy truly honors Kelli’s spirit, and we can’t wait to see the incredible impact you will make in your community and beyond.

Please join us in celebrating James Wells — a young man full of promise, purpose, and heart.
